The record gives only the name "Thos. E. Wilson," and the cataloguers note that it comes from unverified caption data, so the sitter's identity is not confirmed. The name is most often linked to Thomas E. Wilson, the Chicago meatpacker who ran Wilson & Company, but nothing in the record ties this glass negative to him. The Bain News Service made thousands of such negatives in New York from about 1900 to the early 1920s, supplying press photographs of public figures, businessmen, and news events. Its glass plates were usually shot for quick newspaper reproduction, so the portrait's original purpose was likely to illustrate a news story.
