The record names this sheet as Admiral Arthur K. Wilson, but the title comes from unverified caption data supplied by the Bain News Service, so the identification and the date remain open. The glass negative was one of many the agency produced for newspaper and magazine use, mostly in New York, during the early decades of the twentieth century. George Grantham Bain founded the service around 1899, and its files record a steady stream of portraits of military officers, politicians, and public figures for daily papers. Its glass plates, with their handwritten caption cards, remain among the best surviving records of that period's news photography.
