The caption on this glass negative names "Adm. Beatty," though the record flags the title as unverified and taken from notes made by the Bain News Service. The name most likely refers to David Beatty, the British naval officer who commanded the battlecruiser force at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and later became First Sea Lord. Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs from the early 1900s into the 1920s, produced many portraits of public and wartime figures on small glass plates like this one. Because no date is recorded, the occasion of the sitting remains uncertain.
