The name on this glass negative, Adm. F.F. Fletcher, belongs to Frank Friday Fletcher, a U.S. Navy officer who commanded the naval force that seized the port of Veracruz in April 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. That brief occupation brought him wide newspaper attention. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied pictures like this one to newspapers across the country. The identification rests on caption information the agency recorded, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, so the sitter's name should be read with that in mind.
