The caption card names the sitter as Adm. M.E.F. Kerr, a naval officer, but the record carries that identification only as unverified data from the Bain News Service. The Bain agency, a New York business that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, made its pictures on glass negatives. Those plates were often captioned quickly for same-day publication, so names and dates were sometimes recorded imperfectly. Its surviving negatives, later acquired by the Library of Congress, give a record of the people and events that filled the news of the period.
