The record names two men, a naval officer identified as Adm. Knight and a Post Wheeler, but the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote and has not been independently verified. No date is recorded, so the sitting can only be placed by its context. The Bain News Service was a New York press photography agency that supplied newspapers with images of public figures in the early twentieth century, and its portraits of officers and officials show how such agencies gave readers recognizable faces of the people in the news.
