Admiral William S. Benson, the first person to serve as Chief of Naval Operations, is the subject of this glass negative from the Bain News Service, the New York agency whose pictures of public figures ran in newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century. Benson held the post from 1915 to 1919, guiding the Navy through American entry into World War I, including convoy operations and cooperation with the Allied navies. The record gives no date for the exposure, and the library notes that the name comes from caption cards and has not been verified, so the identification rests on the agency's original label.
