The title "Paul Swan" comes from caption data that the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card, and the record has not been independently verified, so the identification rests on that label. If it holds, the sitter would be a dancer, a figure whose stage work drew attention in New York during the 1910s and 1920s, when interpretive and classical-inspired dance was widely covered in the press. Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied photographs of people and events to newspapers of that era, so the glass negative reflects the working practice of a news photo agency rather than a studio portrait. Its date is not recorded, which makes the exact moment of the exposure hard to pin down.
