A glass negative in the Bain collection is titled "Paul Swan," a name associated with the American dancer who performed interpretive works in loose, Greek-inspired costume and bare feet, a sharp break from the corseted stage style of the early 1900s. The Bain News Service, which supplied newspapers with photographs from New York and elsewhere, made large numbers of such negatives, and the title here comes from the agency's own notes, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified. The record gives no date, so the picture is best placed within the collection's broader run of theatrical and celebrity portraits, made roughly between 1905 and 1925.
