Workers from Egypt are shown on a ship's deck in France, according to the caption that Bain News Service attached to the negative, though the record gives no date to confirm it. If the label is accurate, the scene likely belongs to the First World War, when the British Army recruited men from Egypt into the Egyptian Labour Corps. Those laborers were assigned to French ports and supply depots, where they loaded and unloaded cargo, and the picture reflects that wartime logistics work. Bain News Service was a New York news photo agency, so the image was probably made for newspaper use.
