The only identification for this glass negative is the name Dr. J.I. France, taken from a caption card that the Bain News Service attached to its plates, and the name has not been verified. George Grantham Bain started his New York news photo agency around 1900, and its files of news pictures and portraits document people and events in the United States during the first decades of the twentieth century. Because this negative is undated and the sitter's role is not recorded, it is best read as a portrait from that commercial news trade, where photographers often made pictures of people in the news. Small glass plates like this one were a common working format for the agency.
