This negative records a New York National Guard unit, the 7th Regiment, pictured along Fifth Avenue on November 28, 1916, a Tuesday just before Thanksgiving. The date and street are taken from the title, which the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, so the exact location and occasion are not confirmed. The regiment was among the city's best-known militia units, and its armory sat on Park Avenue, so a street-level view of its men or vehicles on Fifth Avenue would have caught the attention of a press photographer. Bain News Service supplied news pictures to newspapers from New York in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates capture the city's streets and public life during the years before the United States entered the First World War.
