Here we see an express train on the Ninth Avenue elevated line in New York City, one of the steel-framed "L" routes that carried passengers above the streets of Manhattan. The Bain News Service, a photo agency that operated in New York in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, and its George Grantham Bain Collection now holds a large body of such work. The record gives no firm date, but the elevated lines were a busy part of city life at the time, with their iron structures, rumbling cars and crowded platforms. Express service let riders skip local stops, which made the trains a practical choice for longer trips across the city.
