The Ninth Avenue Elevated in Manhattan is the subject here, with an express train identified in the title as running on its track. Elevated lines like this one were built in the late nineteenth century to carry New York's growing population above the street, and the Ninth Avenue line ran along the West Side of the city for decades before it was torn down in the 1930s and 1940s. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of glass negatives from the Bain News Service, a press agency that photographed city life for newspapers. The date is not recorded, so the exact year is unknown, but the glass plate format points to the early twentieth century.
