A street collapse on Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, dated September 22, 1915, places this negative in the middle of New York's subway construction. Digging beneath crowded city streets was dangerous work, and cave-ins that swallowed pavement and snarled traffic were a recurring hazard as the city built its rapid transit lines. The Bain News Service, a commercial picture agency, sent photographers to record such events for newspapers, which gives the image the immediacy of a news picture. The title comes from the agency's own notes and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and circumstances should be read with that in mind.
