Seventh Avenue in Manhattan is the setting for this September 1915 cave-in, though the title and date come from caption information the Bain News Service recorded on the glass negative and are unverified. New York was then building its first subway lines, and the cut-and-cover method, which opened long trenches in city streets before roofing them over, made surface collapses a recurring hazard for workers and passersby. Bain News Service was a wire photo agency that sent photographers to record breaking news, so the plate captures a moment of urban construction that newspapers of the day would have reported quickly.
