The caption names a unit called Altman Regt within the Home Defense League, a civilian volunteer force that took shape during the United States' preparations for World War I. Groups like this drilled older men and others who could not serve overseas, so they could guard bridges, utilities and other local sites if regular troops were stretched thin. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold pictures like this one to newspapers, and its glass negatives capture a wartime home front that is easy to overlook. The title comes from caption cards the agency wrote, so the details of this particular unit remain unverified.
