A formation of the 9th Coast Defense troops, led by Maj. Miller according to the caption, was photographed in Union Square in New York. The Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative. The title comes from the agency's caption cards and has not been independently verified. Coast defense units were Army coast artillery companies that manned harbor fortifications, so a formation in a city square may have marked a parade, a ceremony or a public display. The record does not give a date or occasion.
