The sitter is identified only as Maj. Gen. Sugano, a title the Bain News Service recorded on its caption cards, and the record does not confirm that name. Bain's agency photographed newsworthy people in New York and elsewhere from the early 1900s into the 1920s, selling prints to newspapers that needed pictures to run with the day's stories. Military figures, including foreign officers in the news, appear often in its files. With no date recorded, the glass negative is best read as an example of the agency's working method, a quick portrait made for reproduction in print, rather than as a record of a particular event.
