Pershing's visit to the grave of the Marquis de Lafayette in Paris's Picpus Cemetery is the moment this picture is meant to capture. Lafayette had fought for American independence, and in July 1917, soon after the first U.S. troops reached France, Pershing paid his respects there, a gesture that underscored the Franco-American alliance in the First World War. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers, produced many images of wartime figures like this one. The record's title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact date and occasion should be checked against other sources.
