The record identifies the sitter as Gen. G.A. Armes, though the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote and that have not been independently verified, so the name should be read as the archive's attribution. The glass negative is one of thousands the George Grantham Bain Collection holds, made for a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures of public figures, officers and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's glass plates, usually 5 by 7 inches or smaller, are valued today as a record of how news portraits were made before film and wire transmission became common.
