The title on this glass negative, "Gen. Cardorna," comes from caption cards the Bain News Service attached to its images, and the record notes that it is unverified, so the subject's identity is not settled here. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1899 to supply newspapers with pictures of current events. Its glass plates, often exposed for quick publication, reflect the portrait and reportage style that defined the agency's work in the early twentieth century. The undated record offers little more, so the image is best read as an example of press photography from that period.
