Gen. Sir Henry Wilson, a British Army officer whose career spanned the First World War and its aftermath, appears in this glass negative made for the Bain News Service, an American agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers. Wilson served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff from 1918 to 1922, helping direct the final campaigns of the war and the difficult postwar demobilization. He later won a seat in Parliament and was shot dead outside his London home in June 1922 by Irish republican gunmen. The record gives no exposure date, and the identification rests on the agency's caption cards, which were not independently verified.
