Here we have a portrait of Ferdinand Foch, the French general who commanded Allied forces on the Western Front in the last year of the First World War. Foch was named Supreme Allied Commander in March 1918, and he later became Marshal of France. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the Bain News Service's large store of pictures made for the press in the early twentieth century, when newspapers relied on wire photographs to show readers the faces behind wartime news. The record's date is missing and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact sitting is unconfirmed.
