Identified in its record as Gen. Foch, this glass negative most likely shows Ferdinand Foch, the French commander who coordinated Allied forces in the final year of the First World War. His command during the 1918 campaigns contributed to the Armistice of November 1918, and he was named a marshal of France that summer. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, supplied photographs of newsworthy figures like him to American newspapers, so its negatives show how wartime leaders were presented to the public. The date is not recorded, so the occasion of the sitting is uncertain.
