This glass negative names Maj. Gen. William S. Graves, who commanded the American Expeditionary Force in Siberia from 1918 to 1920. Sent to Vladivostok during the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War, he was ordered to stay out of the fighting and often clashed with Allied commanders who wanted a more active role. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with photographs, made images like this for public use, though the record gives no date for this exposure.
