The sitter is listed as General George C. Barnhardt, but that title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied and has not been verified, so the identity should be treated as provisional. The picture survives as a small glass negative, a format widely used for press and portrait work in the early twentieth century because it recorded fine detail. The Bain News Service, founded in New York in the late 1890s, sold photographs of public figures and news events to newspapers, which is why many of its negatives show officials, soldiers and other prominent people. With no date recorded, the portrait is best read as an example of that commercial press trade rather than a record of a specific occasion.
