The caption on this glass negative points to Woodrow Wilson coming ashore from the liner *George Washington*, the Navy transport that carried him to France for the Paris Peace Conference in December 1918. Because the record gives no date and the title is unverified, the scene is best understood through that voyage, which made Wilson the first sitting American president to travel to Europe. Bain News Service, the photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, sold pictures of such arrivals to newspapers, and its glass negatives preserve the details of dockside events of the period.
