The record gives this glass negative the title "Marg. Wilson," but the Bain News Service's own caption notes are unverified, so the sitter's identity and the date remain uncertain. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899, and it sold news and portrait photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives, now held by the Library of Congress, record a wide range of people and events of that era, and many were shot quickly for daily publication. Looking at this portrait, a viewer can appreciate the studio conventions and the quick, commercial purpose behind many Bain images.
