The only identification for this negative is the name H.L. Wilson, taken from data the Bain News Service recorded on the glass or its caption card. The Library of Congress has not verified that name, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, built from the work of a New York news photo agency that Bain founded around 1901 to supply newspapers with pictures of public figures, events and city life. Its glass negatives, most measuring five by seven inches or smaller, show how press photographs were made and filed in the early decades of the twentieth century.
