The caption attached to this glass negative names the sitter as Gen. W.S. Graves, though the record notes that the identification comes from unverified Bain News Service data. Graves is best known as commander of the American Expeditionary Force in Siberia, which landed at Vladivostok in 1918 during the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War. He kept his troops out of the factional fighting, a stance that drew criticism from Allied partners and that he later defended in his 1931 memoir. Bain's glass plates were typically made for quick use by newspapers, so the picture reflects the press demand of its day.
