This picture shows a crowd gathered in the German town of Rothenburg, looking up at a post office clock. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a medieval walled town in Bavaria that drew visitors even in the early twentieth century, so a crowd fixed on a public timepiece suggests a moment of local interest or ceremony. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers and magazines. Its nitrate negatives are now held by the Library of Congress. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote, which the catalog itself flags as unverified.
