Cetinje, the old royal capital of Montenegro in the mountains of the western Balkans, is the setting here, and the title points to the arrival of the post, a modest event in a town far from the main rail routes of Europe. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose glass negatives, mostly from the early twentieth century, were sold to newspapers. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the scene is best read as a glimpse of everyday life in a small Balkan capital, where the mail carried news and business from the outside world.
