Few details survive for this view of the Victor Record Shop, and its title comes from caption cards written by the Bain News Service that remain unverified. Victor, the Camden, New Jersey, firm that made phonographs and records, sold its products through dealers like this one, which stocked machines and discs for a growing home-music market. George Grantham Bain built his New York news photo agency around the turn of the twentieth century, and its glass negatives document everyday commerce and city life of that era. The missing date leaves the picture's exact year uncertain.
