Bremen's City Hall stands on the Marktplatz beside the Roland statue, and its ornate gabled facade is the feature that draws the eye in this exterior view. The building's Gothic core dates to the early fifteenth century, and its Weser Renaissance front was added in the early seventeenth century, which gives it the layered look visible here. The Rathaus and the Roland were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. This negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photo service active in the early twentieth century, though the record offers no date for this view.
