Crowds gathering beneath the clock tower of Munich's New City Hall on the Marienplatz have long turned the hour into a small public ceremony, and this negative captures that habit of waiting. The tower's Glockenspiel, installed in the early twentieth century, sets its carved figures turning and dancing when the bells sound, drawing visitors who stand shoulder to shoulder in the square below. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, produced and distributed images like this one, and the title identifying the scene came from the agency's own notes and has not been independently verified.
