Johanna Gadski, the German soprano, is identified here with Brünnhilde, the warrior maiden of Wagner's *Ring* cycle, a role for which she was well known in the early twentieth century. She sang Wagnerian parts at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for many seasons, and the Bain News Service, a busy New York press photography firm, supplied portraits of such performers to newspapers and magazines. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is unknown. The picture still shows how American audiences of the period were introduced to the stars of Wagner's heroic roles.
