Few American prisons are as widely known as Sing Sing in Ossining, New York, and this glass negative turns that reputation toward its most confined space, a single cell. The Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures from the early 1900s into the 1920s, documented institutions and news events around New York, and its negatives carried captions written quickly by staff. The record's title is unverified, so the exact date and the cell's occupant are not known here. The picture still offers a direct look at the cramped, utilitarian conditions of early twentieth-century prison life.
