Soldiers preparing a meal in the open near the firing line on the North Sea coast is the subject of this glass negative. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs from about 1899 to 1932, produced it, and the title comes from caption cards that remain unverified, so the exact place and date are uncertain. The wording points to a German position close enough to the front for ordinary camp routines, such as cooking, to be photographed as news. Pictures like this show the everyday side of wartime that readers at the time found especially interesting.
