A dugout-style bomb-proof shelter near Avricourt, a village in eastern France close to the German border, is the subject of this glass negative. Shelters like this, dug into the earth and roofed with timber and sandbags, were a common sight in the Lorraine sector during the First World War, a region that had passed between France and Germany several times. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs, made many images of wartime Europe, but the place name on this record comes from unverified caption cards and should be read with that in mind.
