The title credits this glass negative to a Schneider coast defense train, a name that points to the French armaments firm Schneider et Cie, which built heavy artillery that could be mounted on rail carriages. Coast defense trains moved large guns along a shoreline and fired from positions that were hard to pin down, and an observation car would have held the officers who spotted targets and directed fire. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the New York news photo agency's archive from the early twentieth century, when railway artillery drew wide public interest. The record gives no date, and the title is the agency's own unverified label.
