Few details of this glass negative survive beyond its title, Bread Line, Vera Cruz, which the Bain News Service recorded on its caption cards. The port city of Veracruz on Mexico's Gulf coast was a frequent subject of news during the Mexican Revolution, when shortages and unrest in the 1910s made food distribution a pressing concern for urban residents. The Bain News Service, a New York agency active in the early twentieth century, supplied photographs to newspapers, so pictures like this one were made to be reproduced and read alongside current events. The date remains unconfirmed.
