The caption on this glass negative gives the sitter only as "Lord H. Cecil," a label the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives and caption cards, and the library notes that the identification is unverified. The most likely candidate is Lord Hugh Cecil, the British Conservative politician who sat in Parliament for Oxford University and later served as Provost of Eton. The record gives no date, but the Bain agency, a New York news photography business, worked mainly in the early twentieth century, placing this portrait among its press pictures of public figures. Its small glass plate format was typical of the agency's working stock.
