The caption on this glass negative names the sitter as Lord Leverhulme, a title held by William Hesketh Lever, though the record notes that the identification is unverified. Lever built Lever Brothers into a major soap manufacturer and founded Port Sunlight, a model village for factory workers on the Wirral near Liverpool. The Bain News Service, the New York agency behind this negative, supplied newspapers with pictures of notable people of the day, so portraits of prominent British businessmen circulated widely in that period.
