Firemen overcome by smoke during a subway fire is the subject here, a scene that shows how quickly smoke could fill an underground tunnel and how hard rescue work was in such a space. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain, sold pictures of current events to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so images like this were made to be reproduced fast. The record gives only "1/15" as the date, and the title comes from unverified notes made by the agency, so the year and exact location remain uncertain. New York's subway was itself new in this period, which made underground fires a serious concern for the city's fire companies.
