This glass negative shows the Administration Building in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, a public structure that would have been a focal point of government in the city. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact year is uncertain. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures of current events and places to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its era coincides with the period of United States involvement in Haiti from 1915 to 1934, when American officials and Marines were closely tied to the country's public institutions. Viewers may find its record of official architecture from that period useful.
