The title points to three generations of the Bavarian royal line, with Prince Luitpold at the head of the group. Luitpold served as prince regent of Bavaria from 1886 until his death in 1912, governing in place of the mentally incapacitated King Otto, so a portrait of him with his heirs would have signaled continuity of the dynasty at a time when Bavaria remained a kingdom within the German Empire. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the glass-negative archive of the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures of current events and notable people to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record does not give a date, and the title is marked as unverified, so the identities of the younger men should be checked against other sources before they are relied on.
