Theodore M. Davis, the American lawyer and amateur archaeologist, is the named subject here, and his presence on a Bain News Service negative points to the wide newspaper interest in his work. He financed excavations in Egypt's Valley of the Kings in the early 1900s, and his finds drew considerable attention in the American press. The second man in the frame is unidentified, and the title comes from caption data the news service recorded without independent verification, so the exact occasion is uncertain. The glass negative format and the Bain archive's roughly 1900 to 1920s coverage place the image within the era of photojournalism that made such figures familiar to newspaper readers.
