A photographer stands in the water with a camera built on Reighard's design, an early attempt to record life beneath the surface. Jacob Reighard, a University of Michigan zoologist, worked on fish and other aquatic animals and devised equipment for photographing them underwater. The picture comes from the Bain News Service collection, a New York agency that distributed news photographs, so it likely circulated as press material. The glass negative shows how difficult it was, at the time, to keep a camera working in the water.
