A street pump in New York is the focus here, shown in use on a warm summer day. Such pumps were common in American cities around the turn of the twentieth century, before municipal water systems and public fountains became widespread, and they gave pedestrians, workers and children a free drink in the heat. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, the photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain, whose glass negatives document city life in the early 1900s. The title came from the agency's own records and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and date remain uncertain.
